Welcome to Blackstone Maine Coons
Our journey and roots
We started our cattery because we fell in love with the beauty, charm, and gentle nature of European Maine Coons. Their playful personalities and affectionate hearts make them truly special, and we wanted to share that joy with others in the Toronto area.
Our journey began through a close mentorship with a trusted partner cattery in Russia. By working alongside experienced breeders and learning the intricacies of feline genetics and breed standards from them, we gained the expertise necessary to establish our own program here in Canada. This foundation of knowledge allows us to focus on preserving the wild, exotic look of the European line while maintaining the "gentle giant" temperament the breed is famous for.
At Blackstone, we focus on raising healthy, well-socialized kittens in a loving home environment. Our cats are members of our family, not just breeding pairs. We carefully select our cats to ensure strong genetics, great temperaments, and the classic Maine Coon look—complete with high cheekbones and those signature lynx-like ear tufts. From their first days, our kittens are raised with hands-on care to ensure they are ready to become a loyal, lifelong part of your home.
Our Commitment to Health
At Blackstone Maine Coons, the health and longevity of our cats are our highest priorities. We believe that a beautiful Maine Coon must first be a healthy one. To ensure our kittens have the best start in life, our breeding kings and queens undergo rigorous health screenings before joining our program.
We perform comprehensive testing to screen for hereditary conditions common to the breed, including:
• HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy): We use both DNA testing to identify known genetic mutations and regular Echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds) performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist to monitor heart health.
• Hip Dysplasia: Our breeding adults are screened via X-ray to ensure they have strong, healthy joints, reducing the risk of mobility issues.
• SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy): A genetic test is performed to ensure our cats do not carry the gene for this muscular disorder.
• PKDef (Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency): DNA screening is conducted to prevent the inherited anemia associated with this condition.
By combining genetic DNA panels with physical veterinary screenings, we aim to preserve the integrity of the European Maine Coon line and provide our families with healthy, happy companions for years to come.
