Everything You Want to Know
Welcome to our FAQ section! Here, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our European Maine Coons, adoption process, care instructions, and more.
About Our Maine Coons
-
European Maine Coons tend to have a wilder, more exotic look with prominent lynx-like ear tufts, longer muzzles, and high cheekbones. Their coats are often thicker and shaggier, giving them a regal, wild-cat appearance. They also tend to have slightly larger builds compared to their American counterparts.
-
Maine Coons are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds. Males typically weigh 15-25 lbs, while females range between 10-18 lbs. They can reach 40 inches in length from nose to tail tip! Unlike most cats, Maine Coons don’t reach full size until they are 3-5 years old.
-
No cat is truly hypoallergenic, but Maine Coons may be better tolerated by some allergy sufferers. They produce less of the Fel d 1 protein than some other breeds, but they still shed and require regular grooming.
-
Yes, their thick, semi-long fur requires regular maintenance. We recommend:
• Brushing 2-3 times per week to prevent tangles and mats.
• A steel comb and slicker brush work best.
• Occasional baths can help reduce shedding and keep their coat healthy.
• Regular ear cleaning and nail trimming is also important.
Adoption Process
-
We’re so excited that you’re considering welcoming one of our kittens into your home! To officially reserve a kitten, the following steps are required to ensure a smooth and transparent process for both parties:
1. Reservation Deposit
A non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your kitten. This deposit guarantees that your chosen kitten will be held for you and no longer advertised as available. The deposit amount will be applied toward the total purchase price.
2. Adoption Agreement (where applicable)
All families must sign our Adoption Agreement, which outlines our expectations regarding proper care, environment, and veterinary requirements. It also includes a spay/neuter clause unless the kitten is sold with breeding rights. This agreement protects the wellbeing of our kittens and provides peace of mind for both the breeder and the adopter.
3. Final Payment
The remaining balance is due prior to the scheduled pick-up or delivery date. For kittens being shipped or delivered, full payment must be received before arrangements are finalized.
-
Our kittens go to their new homes once they turn 16 weeks old. This ensures they are:
• Properly weaned.
• Socialized with people and other pets.
• Fully vet-checked and have received their first vaccinations.
-
No, we do not allow in-person visits for the health and safety of our kittens. Young kittens have developing immune systems and can be vulnerable to outside germs. Additionally, our cattery is in a private home, and we prioritize a safe, stress-free environment for our cats.
However, we provide regular photo and video updates and offer video calls so you can see your kitten in real time before adoption.
-
Every kitten from Blackstone Maine Coons comes with:

Kitten Health & Care
-
Yes, we recommend feeding a high-quality kitten food with a focus on protein. A mix of wet and dry food is best. Some trusted brands include:
• Royal Canin Maine Coon Kitten
• Orijen Cat & Kitten
• Purina Pro Plan Kitten
We’ll send home a small bag of the food your kitten is used to, and we recommend gradually transitioning them if you plan to switch brands.
-
Maine Coons are generally healthy, but they are prone to:
• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) – A genetic heart condition.
• Hip Dysplasia – More common in larger breeds.
• Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) – Less common but possible.
We genetically test our breeding cats for these conditions to minimize risk.
Shipping & Delivery
-
Yes! We offer:
• Air travel with pet-friendly airlines
• Ground delivery via professional pet transport services.
• Personal delivery (for nearby locations).
We always ensure kittens travel safely and comfortably in airline-approved carriers with all required health documents.
-
Shipping costs vary based on location but typically range from $300-$600. We will provide an exact quote before finalizing the adoption.
-
Travel can be a new experience, so some mild stress is normal, but kittens generally adjust very well. They are transported in a secure, climate-controlled carrier and handled by experienced, caring professionals who specialize in animal transport. Your kitten will be safe and well-monitored throughout the journey. Most kittens settle quickly once they arrive and begin exploring their new home.
Spaying & Neutering
-
In most cases, our kittens are already spayed or neutered before going to their new homes. However, if your kitten is not yet fixed at the time of placement—due to age or individual circumstances—you will be responsible for having the procedure completed by the age specified in our adoption agreement. Proof of spay/neuter will be required as part of our commitment to responsible breeding and pet ownership.
-
Early spaying or neutering helps prevent unwanted litters, reduces the risk of certain health issues like reproductive cancers and infections, and often leads to better behavior by minimizing hormone-driven behaviors such as marking or aggression. It also supports responsible pet ownership and helps reduce the number of homeless animals. For breeders, it ensures that pet kittens are not used for unplanned or unauthorized breeding.
Socialization & Training
-
Yes! Our kittens are raised in a home environment, where they experience:
• Handling by people of all ages (including children).
• Exposure to household noises (TVs, vacuums, etc.).
• Interaction with other cats and pets.
This helps ensure they grow into confident, well-adjusted cats.
-
Yes! Maine Coons are very friendly and social. They usually get along well with:
• Other cats.
• Dogs (especially if introduced properly).
• Children and even small pets.
Proper introductions are key. Take it slow and allow your kitten time to adjust.
-
Yes! They are one of the most intelligent cat breeds and can:
• Learn tricks like fetching or high-fives.
• Be leash-trained for outdoor walks.
• Be taught to use a scratching post instead of furniture.
They thrive with positive reinforcement and interactive play.
